Bully the Chihuahua recently celebrated his 23rd birthday, which is impressive for a dog of his age. While most dogs his age are finishing up their studies and planning for the future, Bully is content to live out his golden years as a 104-year-old in human years, lounging around and snacking on treats. Of course, no birthday is complete without a party, and Bully’s owners made sure to throw him a celebration he wouldn’t forget. They decorated with big balloons and gave him a bone-shaped treat with fancy icing that read “Happy Birthday.” The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the celebratory naps that followed. Chris Hughes and his wife Marie are the proud owners of The Mr. Mo Project, a private senior dog rescue where Bully and four other elderly pups aged 20 and over reside. Despite his age, Bully is still going strong and enjoying life to the fullest.

The adorable little pup made his entrance into the world on the 5th of April in 1999, and was taken in by a loving family who cared for him for 21 long years.
Meet Bully, the adorable Chihuahua who was born on April 5, 1999. He has had a wonderful life so far and we’re pretty sure he would agree that the early 2000s were an amazing time. He was born into a loving family and enjoyed playing outside and going for runs in the local park, where he made plenty of friends. However, as his previous owner grew older, they could no longer care for him. Luckily, Bully found a new home with Chris and Mariesa at the rescue.
According to Bully’s former owner, he is a “big dog in a little dog’s body,” and Chris quickly realized that despite his age, Bully hadn’t changed one bit from the young pup he once was. Chris described Bully as feisty, naughty, sweet, independent, gentle, calm, and possessing an old man bark. Even at the age of 23, he still doesn’t hesitate to push around the other Chihuahuas residing in the Hughes household. Although it is sad that his previous owner couldn’t take care of him any longer, Bully has found his way into the hearts of the Hughes family.
The Hughes family is the driving force behind the Mr. Mo Project, a non-profit organization that rescues senior dogs and aims to provide them with a loving and secure environment to call home. The project brings together older dogs in need of rescue, with the hope of offering them a brighter future. The Mr. Mo Project is an admirable initiative that provides a safe haven for canine companions who may have otherwise been left alone or abandoned.
Bully, despite his larger-than-life personality, is getting older and requires more rest than the average pup. His owner, Chris, has noticed that he has a tendency to fall asleep anywhere, from the kitchen floor to the comfiest bed in the corner. Thus, for his birthday, the Hughes family decided to give him the gift of a good night’s sleep and a soft, crumbly biscuit to enjoy.
Although the family initially had reservations about adopting a 21-year-old, unaltered Chihuahua, they quickly fell in love with Bully and his lovable quirks. In an Instagram post, they expressed their gratitude for the joy he has brought into their lives. They can’t imagine their family without him now. Despite his age, Bully isn’t seeking a new home, as he has found a loving family with the Hughes.
The birthday message received a significant amount of attention, with fans and companies generously giving gifts and making donations. The response was overwhelming and heartwarming. Credit goes to MrMorph for the image used in this post.
Bully, the beloved family dog, received an outpouring of love and well wishes on his 23rd birthday. The family’s Instagram post announcing the milestone received over 10,000 likes as people from all over sent their best wishes to Bully. In addition to kind messages, donations and gifts came pouring in, including a surprise gift box from Barkbox, a company specializing in monthly dog toy and treat subscriptions. The family was thrilled with the response and shared their gratitude on Instagram, saying that Bully woke up from his nap a happy pup when they told him how many people were thinking of him. This isn’t the first celebration for Bully, as the Hughes family makes sure to commemorate every occasion and victory.
Bully isn’t the only pooch who gets treated on their birthday. Every furry member of the family is celebrated for various occasions such as completing chemo treatments, adoptions, Christmas, and more. Chris explained that they like to acknowledge all the positive things that happen in their home as there are often not-so-great events as well. The primary goal of the rescue is to save senior dogs from spending their golden years in shelters or facing euthanasia. The organization is named after Mr. Mo, their dear senior dog who inspired the creation of the non-profit. Chris and Mariesa launched the initiative to rescue senior shelter dogs across America and honor the memory of their beloved late pet, Mr. Mo.
The accuracy of the commonly used dog-to-human years conversion is uncertain, as it usually only goes up to 20 years. Chihuahuas, known for having longer lifespans, can even live up to 23 years, which is remarkable. However, why do smaller dog breeds tend to live longer than their bigger counterparts? According to Dr. Andrew Miller, a dog’s lifespan ranges from 10 to 13 years on average, and this decreases as the dog’s size increases. This means that choosing a puppy based on their size is crucial as you commit to a set amount of time with them. Professor Mark Elgar from the University of Melbourne’s School of Biosciences explains that studies indicate larger dogs have shorter lifespans because they age much faster than smaller dogs.
The size of a larger dog can cause more stress on their body, resulting in quicker wear and tear. Just like cars, which generally last around eight or nine years before experiencing wear and tear, dogs can also deteriorate at different rates depending on their breed. However, there are various ways to help your furry friends live longer and enjoy more birthdays.
Similar to humans, the lifestyle of dogs can also affect their morbidity rate. PetMD offers a comprehensive list of tips for pet owners who want their furry friends to live longer. It’s important to ensure that your pet does not become overweight, as this can reduce their lifespan and quality of life. Avoid giving them table scraps and treat them like a trash can. Regular dental checkups and annual health checkups are also essential, as small issues can quickly become life-threatening. Encourage exercise, but don’t overdo it as different breeds have different exercise requirements. Socializing your pups is crucial to prevent depression caused by a lack of human interaction, playtime, and love. Lastly, it’s highly recommended to spay or neuter your dogs as this can significantly reduce the risk of several cancers and other behavioral issues that arise in intact dogs. Let’s wish Bully a belated happy birthday and send our love to all his furry friends and family.
It’s time to show some love to our furry friends and appreciate the joy they bring us. We want to send a belated happy birthday to Bully and hope he’s enjoying life with his human and canine pals. Maybe, Bully might even break the record for the oldest dog in The Guinness World Records, but we’ll have to wait and see.
